“Maybe the journey isn’t so much about becoming anything. Maybe it’s about unbecoming everything that really isn’t you, so you can be who you were meant to be in the first place.”

How The KonMari Method™ Works

The KonMari Method™ focuses on keeping only those items which bring joy to your life rather than what needs to be eliminated. If it brings joy to you, then it must have a “home” to reside in once we eliminate clutter and disarray. Items that are no longer needed or spark joy are let go of and discarded with gratitude. You “thank them” and then let them go.

Through The KonMari Method™, comprehensive, life-changing tidying is not done by location—i.e., the kitchen, dining room, bedrooms—but is done by category, beginning with clothes, then books, and papers, komono (miscellaneous items), and concluding with sentimental items.

This Tidying Series totally transforms your home and is comprised of several lessons (below). A complimentary phone consultation will be conducted prior to our first lesson so that we can discuss your vision of your home and the lifestyle goals you are hoping to achieve through this tidying process. Lessons must be completed in the order that is listed below.

Tidying Series

Lesson 1: Clothing

During this lesson, I will assess all storage areas and together we will create a plan of action. This includes ALL articles of clothing belonging to the Client I am working with that day and does not cover any other family members. Together, we will go through each item with the “joy check” process. After choosing what to keep, the proper folding technique and storage space will be determined to best support your remaining articles of clothing.

Lesson 2: Books

During this lesson, we will go through all the books and magazines throughout your home. This includes general titles, cookbooks, educational school books, and magazines.

Lesson 3: Papers

During this lesson, we will assess the paperwork throughout your home. This includes sorting through manuals, warranties, financial statements, and personal paperwork. We will discuss which papers are necessary to keep and how to best store them for your records.

Lesson 4 & 5: Komono

During these lessons, we will look at the day-to-day items stored throughout the home. These lessons are dedicated to what Marie Kondo calls “KOMONO”. It includes all the items we store in our bathroom and kitchen closets, drawers, cabinets, and/or pantry. Also included are hobby items and seasonal decorations.

Lesson 6: Sentimental Items

During this lesson, we will examine what to do with sentimental items. These include personal treasures, photos, and memorabilia. The process saves this category for last because once we arrive at this lesson, your ability to hone in on what brings you joy is that much greater. By this point, you will have discovered the ability to let go of the things that no longer serve your highest good.

The above is a general outline of a true KonMari Method™ Tidying Series, based on the average size home with 2-3 bedrooms. At the end of each tidying lesson, you will be left with homework assignments to help finish up or start preparing for the next lesson. It’s important that you understand the key elements that make this method attainable and long-lasting. This imparts confidence and enables you to maintain your new lifestyle and help others within the home spark their joy as well.

Each lesson lasts approximately 5 hours, and the full Tidying Series using the KonMari Method™ is approximately 5 lessons in total. This can be completed within a fairly concentrated timeframe, or spread out over a reasonable amount of time, usually completing it within a 3-6 month time frame—that depends on you!

Please contact Sage of Interiors by email or phone at (203) 772-8883 to discuss your specific project and to get a detailed cost estimate for your complete Tidy Series or tidy lesson.

Note: Any additional hours required beyond initial estimates will be dependent upon your ability to move through each category efficiently while working diligently on homework assignments between our lessons.

These are truly lessons because they are meant to help you change the way you think about your items and how to display and “house” them with joy.

Individual 5 Hour Lessons are available. These tailored lessons will be individualized to meet your needs while still adhering to The KonMari Method™ principles.
